The “Icons and Influence” event brought together Kent State students with live speakers, networking opportunities and friendly workshops. Kent Public Relations Student Society of America and Kent American Advertising Federation held the event at Franklin Hall on September 18, focusing on teaching students how to connect with an audience.
Marcus Collins, professor and author of “For Culture,” and Hannah Wing, assistant professor of communication at Wichita State University, spoke with students about their research and work with celebrities such as Taylor Swift and Beyoncé. The students learned how to connect with the audience to show cultural activities and trends.
The event was open to all students with the hope that they would walk away with some helpful information about working in community organizations. The vice president of professional regulation for PRSSA, senior Tanner Poe, also spoke at the event, asking questions of the speakers and leading the discussion.
“I hope the students took something useful from what Taylor Swift or Beyoncé did with their brands to create engagement,” Poe said.
Kara Planey, a freshman in social media, shared her thoughts on participating in the “Icons and Influence” event.
“My most important thing is the relationship between activists and celebrities and their fans and the importance of maintaining that connection in their work,” Planey said.
Planey also spoke about how PRSSA has helped her network through their events and how it has brought her networks of help for the future.
“I went to the last PRSSA meeting, and many of the speakers offered their LinkedIn and strong advice,” he said.
Students walked away from “Meaning and Experience” with knowledge and relationships that will hopefully grow into achievements for them in the future.
“Students can use techniques or tricks used by famous people and bring them down in whatever they do,” he said. a Poe after the event.
He added that PRSSA is always looking for ways to attract and engage with students. Their mission is to improve students’ social networking and leadership skills, while also exposing students to professional opportunities.
“We’re always looking for topics and ideas that resonate with students,” Poe said. “The main mission is to expose students to social activities, especially music. We have noticed that this is a great hobby that students want to go to.”
The music and popular theme was sure to be a delight for the students. Plany shared his favorite part of the speakers at the event.
“When Dr. Marcus mentioned that Beyoncé was trying to name her fandom and the type of manager, I realized that it is very interesting to see how you have a plan, but it can change because of the audience itself. well,” he said.
There will be many more events like this in the future, said Poe.
“Our next meeting is October 8 at 6 pm in Franklin Hall,” he said. “We’re going to have the president of the Cleveland Film Commission, Bill Garvey, come in and talk about shooting Superman in the summer.”
The event “Icons and Influence” brought together many Kent State students to think and gain knowledge about social media.
“The speaker was really great; they provided a lot of helpful insights about pop culture,” Planey said. “I will attend another event.”
